Altos de Riomar is a sub-barrio inside the Riomar locality, the wedge of north Barranquilla that runs toward the Circunvalar and the road out to Puerto Colombia. Roughly, it sits between Carrera 53 and Carrera 65 around Calles 90 to 96, and the newer Carrera 65 has become its main connection to the rest of the north. It is one of the most expensive corners of the city, and it sits a couple of minutes from the cluster of malls at Buenavista. This is one of the newest parts of Barranquilla, and it reads that way. Most of what you see is contemporary apartment towers behind gates and porterías, with manicured common areas rather than the deep front gardens and century-old trees of the older south. A lot of the buildings have arrived in the last several years, so the look is glass, render and balconies rather than neoclassical stone. If you want history and shade you will not find much of it here; if you want a new, secure building with a pool, this is the part of the city built for exactly that.

Casi todo lo que ves son torres de apartamentos contemporáneas tras rejas y porterías, con zonas comunes cuidadas más que con los antejardines profundos y los árboles centenarios del sur más antiguo. The big draw of this corner is convenience. The Buenavista shopping centers (Buenavista I and II and Mallplaza Buenavista, plus the Viva center) are a short drive away, which is where most residents do their shopping, eat out, and go to the cinema. There are parks in the Riomar area and a number of well-regarded private schools nearby, which is a large part of why families choose it. For sit-down meals, the better-known restaurant scene is spread across the north rather than inside Altos de Riomar itself, so it is worth scanning our roundup of the best restaurants in Barranquilla before you assume everything is within walking distance. The Circunvalar on the edge of the locality gives you a quick run to the airport and the road to the beaches at Puerto Colombia.

El gran atractivo de este rincón es la comodidad. Los centros comerciales de Buenavista (Buenavista I y II y Mallplaza Buenavista, más el centro Viva) quedan a pocos minutos en carro, y es ahí donde la mayoría de los residentes hacen mercado, salen a comer y van a cine. Altos de Riomar is mostly estrato 6, the top tier, with some estrato 5 buildings mixed in. The people here tend to be professionals and business owners with families, plus Colombians who have come back from living abroad. It is a comfortable, private kind of place, and the trade-off for that comfort is the bill: utilities and property taxes are charged at the highest estrato, so they run noticeably more than in the rest of the city, and the newer towers add a monthly administration fee (cuota de administración) for the pool, gym and security on top of rent.

Altos de Riomar es en su mayoría estrato 6, el más alto, con algunos edificios estrato 5 entremezclados. La gente aquí suele ser profesionales y empresarios con familia, además de colombianos que regresaron de vivir afuera. Es un lugar cómodo y privado, y el costo de esa comodidad es la cuenta: los servicios y el predial se cobran al estrato más alto, así que salen bastante más caros que en el resto de la ciudad, y las torres nuevas suman una cuota de administración mensual por la piscina, el gimnasio y la seguridad, aparte del arriendo.

On rent, a one-bedroom in a newer tower runs roughly COP 2,400,000 to 3,600,000 a month (USD $600 to $900 at 4.000:1), and two-bedrooms land around COP 3,600,000 to 5,600,000 (USD $900 to $1,400). One thing to plan for: most landlords here want a local co-signer (codeudor) who owns property in the city, or an insurance-backed guarantee (poliza). On a passport that is harder to arrange than on a cedula, so many foreigners end up paying several months up front or renting through an agency instead. Our housing guide covers the workarounds.
